The United Kingdom and Germany have reinforced their commitment to supporting Nigeria’s fight against terrorism following a high-level visit by their defence representatives to the country’s North-East theatre of operations.
The UK Defence Attaché, Brigadier-General Tom Harper, and the German Defence Attaché, Colonel Boris Bovecamp, visited the Theatre Command of Operation HADIN KAI in Maiduguri, Borno State, the operational headquarters of Nigeria’s counter-insurgency campaign against extremist groups in the region.
During the visit, the delegates reaffirmed their countries’ continued collaboration with the Nigerian Armed Forces in tackling terrorism and insurgency.
They emphasized the long-standing relationship between their nations and Nigeria, describing it as one rooted in mutual respect and shared strategic interests.
Both officials highlighted a collective commitment to upholding the rule of law, democracy, and human rights while strengthening security cooperation.
They reiterated ongoing and future support in the areas of military training, capacity building, logistics assistance, and technical expertise aimed at enhancing the operational effectiveness of Nigerian troops on the frontlines.
Senior Nigerian military officials, including the Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI, commended the United Kingdom and Germany for their sustained partnership.
The leadership noted that foreign training programmes and technical support have contributed significantly to improving operational coordination, intelligence capabilities, and combat readiness in the fight against terror groups operating in the North-East.
The visit forms part of broader international backing for Nigeria’s security efforts.
In recent years, Nigeria has deepened security cooperation with global partners, including the United States and the European Union, particularly in areas such as intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism strategy, and defence sector reform.
Security analysts say the renewed engagement underscores the strategic importance of Nigeria in regional stability efforts across West Africa, where cross-border insurgency and asymmetric threats continue to pose complex challenges.
