WorldStage— The National Sports Commission (NSC) has approved Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme as the interim General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following the abrupt resignation of the FA’s President, Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi, and the entire Executive Committee.
The mass resignation on Thursday plunged Nigerian football administration into an unprecedented leadership crisis that resulted from mounting regulatory and administrative pressures within the football ecosystem.
To prevent an administrative vacuum and ensure stability, the NSC stepped in to manage the transition.
Dr Ikpeme, a seasoned administrator who previously served as the NFF’s Deputy General Secretary, was selected to guide the federation through the turbulent period.
In an official statement, the NSC explained that Ikpeme’s endorsement stems from his extensive institutional knowledge and track record in sports administration.
The Commission noted that the priority is to maintain continuity in the federation’s daily operations, especially crucial as Nigeria prepares for various high-stakes international tournaments and qualifiers.
“The National Sports Commission’s primary objective is to safeguard Nigerian football from prolonged instability,” an NSC spokesperson stated.
“Dr Ikpeme represents a steady hand. He understands the inner workings of the federation and can restore order while we chart a clear path forward,” the spokesperson added.
As interim General Secretary, Dr Ikpeme will manage the NFF Secretariat and coordinate with international football bodies like CAF and FIFA.
His immediate task is to stabilize the administration and oversee the transition to a new executive board.
Analysts hope his appointment will restore confidence among corporate sponsors and international stakeholders.
The NSC has announced that it will work closely with football stakeholders to set up an electoral committee.
“This committee will be tasked with organizing transparent elections to fill the vacant leadership positions. Until then, Dr Ikpeme is expected to manage all administrative affairs to keep the national game running smoothly,” the Commission stated.
