WorldStage– Operatives of the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested 68 suspected drug traffickers and seized 7,531.51 kg of narcotic drugs during a massive crackdown throughout the month of August 2026.
The State Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed the breakthrough while presenting the command’s monthly operational scorecard in Benin City.
According to the report, the extensive sweep was part of an intensified intelligence-led effort to dismantle major drug syndicates operating within Edo State.
The suspects arrested comprise both male and female traffickers caught at various points across the state.
In addition to the massive seizure of illicit substances, NDLEA enforcement officers successfully located and destroyed four massive cannabis farms.
The illicit farmlands, spanning a combined 2.57 hectares, were estimated to yield an additional 6,433.33 kg of cannabis.
The operations targeted hidden enclaves including the Igbanke Forest in Orhionmwon Local Government Area (LGA), as well as the Ukaro and Ewe forests located in Owan West LGA.
Addressing journalists, Commander Ofoyeju reiterated the agency’s unyielding stance against narcotics distribution.
“We are unwavering in our commitment to tackling the drug problem in Edo State. Our recent operations showcase our dedication to flushing out drugs from our communities and apprehending those who wish to profit from the suffering of others,” he stated.
Regarding legal proceedings, Ofoyeju explained that the command recorded no convictions in August because the Federal High Court was on its annual vacation.
However, the legal unit successfully filed three new cases, leaving 87 other drug-related trials pending in court.
Beyond punitive measures, the Edo State Command said it sustained its focus on harm reduction, drug demand reduction, and rehabilitation.
During the month under review, according to the command, 23 clients received counseling services, 12 individuals were enrolled in various vocational training schemes, and five distinct public sensitization campaigns were held, educating over 2,150 participants on the dangers of substance abuse.
The NDLEA has pledged to deepen its collaboration with local community leaders, media organizations, and sister security networks to completely cripple drug trafficking rings and safeguard families across Edo State.
