WorldStage— The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) have pledged closer collaboration to help Nigeria achieve its target of raising crude oil production to 3 million barrels per day by 2030.
The commitment was made on Wednesday, when the newly elected PENGASSAN President, Comrade Bosun Olabiyi-Agoro, led the union’s leadership on a visit to the NUPRC headquarters in Abuja.
Olabiyi-Agoro said the union was ready to work with the Commission and other stakeholders to support the Federal Government’s production target.
“The President of Nigeria has an ambition which he runs through the CCE, which is to make sure that by 2030 we are able to produce 3 million barrels per day. All of us have to work to make that happen,” he said.
He assured the Commission that PENGASSAN would adopt a reasonable approach in its engagement with stakeholders, while stressing that workers’ rights to freely associate and join the union remained non-negotiable.
The PENGASSAN President also identified contract staffing as one of the key issues his administration would address.
Speaking earlier, the NUPRC Commission Chief Executive, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, said Nigeria’s crude oil production had increased from about 1.1 million barrels per day a few years ago to an estimated 1.755 million barrels per day in 2026.
She attributed the improvement partly to government measures aimed at stimulating investment in the upstream sector, including the recent executive order targeting increased investment in deep offshore oil and gas projects.
Eyesan, however, stressed that sustained industrial stability would be critical to achieving higher production levels and called for PENGASSAN’s support.
“As you settle into your new role, be assured that the Commission will give you 150% cooperation. In addition to the support we will give you, we want to ask that we work very closely to actualize government objectives,” she said.
Eyesan also disclosed that Nigeria was targeting an increase in gas production from below 8 billion cubic feet per day (bcf/d) to 12 bcf/d by 2030.
“We want to grow production from our current level to 3 million barrels in 2030. For gas, we are still doing under 8bcf and we want to grow that to 12bcf by 2030. So, let’s make that happen,” she added.
