WorldStage– In a major crackdown on the illicit manufacturing of fake consumer goods, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has seized counterfeit packaging materials valued at over ₦200 million.
The enforcement operation took place at the Old Court Road Market in Aba, Abia State, resulting in the sealing of five prominent commercial shops implicated in the illegal trade.
Operatives from NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate conducted the coordinated raid following weeks of gathering credible intelligence regarding a syndicate specializing in the production and supply of materials used to package fake alcoholic beverages.
The enforcement team uncovered an extensive cache of highly sophisticated materials designed to clone popular global and local liquor brands.
Among the confiscated items were fake labels, bottle corks, branded cartons, and outer packaging materials.
The premium and popular brands targeted by the counterfeiters included Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, Lord’s Dry Gin, Imperial Blue, Chelsea, Squadron, and Seaman’s Aromatic Schnapps.
In an alarming discovery, the team also intercepted packaging materials for sachet alcohol, a product category that has been officially banned under Nigerian regulatory frameworks.
A senior NAFDAC official described the quality of the seized items as deeply troubling.
According to the agency, the imitation packaging materials were produced with such technical precision that even the original brand owners would struggle to differentiate them from genuine ones.
This level of sophistication poses an extreme threat to public health, as it allows dangerous, unverified chemical mixtures to be passed off as premium spirits.
The enforcement exercise was not without friction. NAFDAC operatives encountered intense hostility, verbal threats, and physical resistance from hostile traders within the market who attempted to obstruct the operation.
Despite the tense standoff, officials successfully evacuated the high-value contraband.
The shop owners fled the scene before the arrival of the enforcement team and remain at large.
NAFDAC has in the interim placed the five targeted premises under lock and official seal to prevent tampering with any remaining evidence.
Following the raid, the leadership of the local market intervened to de-escalate the tension.
The Chairman of the Market Union has formally pledged full cooperation with federal authorities.
He promised to assist NAFDAC in maintaining the security of the sealed shops and ensuring that the fleeing owners are identified and brought forward for interrogation.
This latest operation highlights NAFDAC’s intensified nationwide campaign against substandard and falsified regulatory products.
The agency has reiterated its warning to the public to remain vigilant when purchasing alcoholic beverages, advising consumers to scrutinize packaging and report any suspicious distribution hubs directly to regional offices.
Regulatory investigations remain ongoing, and the agency confirms that criminal charges will be filed once the suspects are apprehended.
