WorldStage– The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested suspects linked to a plot targeting National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving as ad hoc staff for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The disclosure was made by the Chairman of INEC, Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN), during the South-East Zonal Interactive Meeting with Staff and Readiness Assessment held in Enugu.
Amupitan revealed that the security architecture of the country successfully neutralised the threat after the electoral umpire identified potential risks to its temporary field workers.
According to the commission’s Daily Bulletin, the preemptive operation by the DSS saved what could have been a coordinated assault on election infrastructure.
Youth corps members traditionally serve as the operational backbone for polling unit logistics across Nigeria, and threatening their safety places a direct strain on the feasibility of conducting free and fair elections.
“The people behind the plot against the Commission’s ad hoc staff, especially Youth Corps members, have been uncovered by the DSS, arrested, and will be prosecuted soon,”
Amupitan stated, commending the secret police for their swift action.
While details regarding the identities of the suspects and the exact nature of their planned operations remain classified, the electoral commission noted that the development forms part of broader security challenges being mapped out early.
Security experts have increasingly raised concerns over the safety of youth corpers, who frequently become targets of political thugs and aggrieved actors during tense electoral cycles.
In response to the evolving political climate, Professor Amupitan announced that INEC is finalizing arrangements to host a national Security Conference very soon.
The conference will gather heads of various security agencies, stakeholders, and civic bodies to draft robust protection frameworks for all temporary and permanent staff ahead of the 2027 polls.
The commission reassured the public, as well as the management of the NYSC, that it remains fully committed to reinforcing security measures, improving welfare package guarantees, and securing the electoral environment long before the first ballots are cast.
