WorldStage— The Tertiary Institutions National Laureate Prize has been established by the Federal Ministry of Education to recognise, reward and elevate outstanding academic research, innovation and intellectual excellence across Nigeria’s tertiary education system.
Unveiling the initiative during a press conference at Federal Ministry of Education Podium in Abuja on Wednesday, August 26, 2027, Dr. Rauf Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education enunciated the essence of the initiative as follows:
*As part of our continuing efforts to reposition education as a catalyst for national development, I recently inaugurated the Tertiary Institutions National Laureate Prize Committee and charged it with the responsibility of providing the strategic direction, governance and integrity required for the successful implementation of this important national initiative.
*The National Laureate Prize represents a deliberate effort by the Federal Government to strengthen Nigeria’s culture of scholarship and innovation by ensuring that exceptional academic achievement receives the national recognition it deserves.
*For many years, our national attention and reward systems have not sufficiently celebrated the remarkable work taking place in our universities and other tertiary institutions. Across this country, young Nigerians and academics are conducting research, developing solutions, creating new technologies and generating ideas capable of addressing some of our most pressing developmental challenges.
*As a Government, we believe that these young men and women and our distinguished academics deserve to be seen, supported and celebrated.
*Our message is therefore very clear: scholarship matters; research matters; innovation matters; and intellectual excellence deserves a prominent place in our national consciousness.
*The National Laureate Prize is one of the initiatives of the Renewed Hope Agenda of our dear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the educational sector, which is been jointly implemented by the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) and the Federal Ministry of Education.
*It will provide a structured national platform for identifying and rewarding exceptional academic research with significant potential for innovation, commercialisation, industrial application and national development.
*An annual prize pool of approximately ₦365 million is envisaged for different categories of outstanding academic work, including undergraduate dissertations demonstrating strong commercial potential, exceptional Master’s theses, and Doctoral (Ph.D.) theses with clear industrial and developmental applications.
*There will also be Special Prizes recognising outstanding work in critical fields, including Engineering and Technology, Medicine and Health Sciences, Arts and Social Sciences, Agriculture, Law and Teaching Innovation.
*Importantly, some of these Special Prizes will honour distinguished Nigerians whose lives symbolise exceptional service, courage and contribution to our nation.
*One of these will be the Dr. Stella Adadevoh Prize for Medicine and Medical Innovation, in honour of the extraordinary physician whose courage and professional sacrifice contributed significantly to preventing the 2014 Ebola outbreak from becoming a national catastrophe. Her legacy demonstrates the transformative power of knowledge, professionalism and service to humanity.
*I have made it clear to the Committee that the credibility of the National Laureate Prize will depend fundamentally on the credibility of its selection process.
*The process will therefore be transparent, competitive, merit-driven and insulated from political, institutional or personal influence. Excellence must be the determining factor.
*Participation and submission of academic reports and entries will also conform with the National Policy on the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank, thereby strengthening the integrity, accessibility and long-term preservation of Nigeria’s intellectual output.
*Beyond rewarding excellence,
The National Laureate Prize is not simply another awards programme. It is an instrument for changing aspirations. We want Nigerian students to understand that there is honour in scholarship, opportunity in innovation and national recognition for intellectual excellence.
*An undergraduate developing a commercially viable innovation to know that Nigeria values that work.
*A Master’s student investigating a solution to an important national problem to know that the country is paying attention and We want our doctoral researchers to see a clear pathway from academic research to industrial application, enterprise creation and national development.
*Ultimately, we must build an education system that does not simply produce certificates but produces solutions, innovations, enterprises and measurable national value.
*The most successful nations of the twenty-first century will not necessarily be those endowed with the greatest natural resources. They will be those that can systematically transform knowledge into solutions, research into enterprise, and intellectual capital into economic and industrial value.
*Through the National Laureate Prize, we are therefore making an important national statement: the innovator matters, the scholar matters, the researcher matters, and the rigour of our laboratories and intellectual institutions deserves national celebration.
*Under the leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, we remain committed to building an education system that develops the knowledge, skills, creativity and innovation required to drive Nigeria’s economic transformation and global competitiveness.
*The Tertiary Institutions National Laureate Prize is another important step in that direction.
*Together, we will build a Nigeria where excellence is recognised, scholarship is celebrated, innovation is rewarded, and the intellectual capacity of our young people is deliberately harnessed for national development.
