WorldStage– New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), a political party founded by Dr. Boniface Aniebonam has announced its intention to proceed with its scheduled congresses and national convention, despite the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) ongoing delay in recognizing its new leadership.
The party’s founder stated that INEC has failed to upload and recognize the National Working Committee (NWC) led by Dr. Agbo Major.
The leadership crisis within the party arose from a power struggle between the founder and the 2023 presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso over the party’s structure, ideology, and future direction.
The crisis, which escalated through 2024–2026, resulted in parallel leadership structures, multiple expulsions, and intense legal battles, particularly in Kano State, where the party originally held power.
A Federal Capital Territory High Court on March 17, 2026 ordered INEC to comply with the updates within 72 hours.
The NNPP expressed concern that more than three weeks had passed without any formal response or action from the commission.
The party issued a seven-day ultimatum to INEC, threatening to initiate contempt and committal proceedings if the court order remains ignored.
Despite these legal hurdles, the NNPP affirmed its commitment to operational schedule.
It said the congresses and convention would be to solidify the party’s leadership structure and prepare for all elective positions in the 2027 general elections.
The party has already submitted its official programme of action for the events to the commission while officials argue that previous delays by INEC had cost the party numerous opportunities to participate in various elections nationwide, necessitating that they proceed “with or without” the commission’s immediate obedience.
The party also warned that INEC’s persistent disregard for court rulings could risk further adjustments to the national election timetable.
