WorldStage— Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has approved a 60 per cent increase in the monthly subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions.
This is contained in a statement made available to newsmen by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, on Monday in Akure.
The statement said the approval was part of the administration’s commitment to strengthening the education sector and improving workers’ welfare.
It said that the governor had also approved the immediate implementation of the agreement reached between the Federal Government and unions in the university system.
According to the statement, the two interventions take effect from August.
It said the increase in subventions was aimed at strengthening the capacity of the institutions to meet their financial obligations, ensure prompt payment of salaries and improve the learning environment for students and staff.
“The governor has approved an immediate 60 per cent increment in the monthly subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions in the state.
“This decision is aimed at strengthening the capacity of the institutions to meet their obligations, ensure prompt payment of salaries and improve the overall learning environment for students and staff,” the statement said.
It said the implementation of the Federal Government, University Unions’ agreement would address long-standing welfare concerns, boost staff morale and align the institutions with national standards.
The statement said the approval covered all relevant state-owned tertiary institutions in the state.
It urged the managements of the affected institutions to ensure judicious use of the increased subventions, with priority given to staff welfare and academic excellence.
It also urged the unions to reciprocate the gesture by maintaining industrial harmony and focusing on quality education for students.
The statement said the current administration remained committed to making the state a hub for quality tertiary education and would continue to take steps to support state-owned institutions
