WorldStage– The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has confirmed the vandalisation of one of its safety and patrol surveillance fibre boats operating along the Katcha-Baro-Nupeko, Patigi and Lafiagi waterways in Niger and Kwara states.
Mr Akapo Adeboye, NIWA Area Manager for Niger and Kwara Area Office, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Minna, describing the incident as a disturbing attack on government property.
Adeboye said that the fibre patrol boat, powered by twin 75-horsepower Yamaha outboard engines, was vandalised on July 11 at the Katcha waterfront.
He noted that the incident was the second attack on NIWA property recorded in the Niger South Senatorial District.
According to him, the destruction of the patrol boat could undermine the authority’s efforts to ensure safety, security and effective surveillance on the inland waterways.
The area manager appealed to security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.
He, however, assured waterway users of NIWA’s commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining safe navigation across the nation’s inland waterways.
