WorldStage– The Nigeria Police Force high command has launched a critical investigation into alleged inciting comments made by the Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sainna Buba.
The police also disclosed that the Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Danjuma Shekwolo, and the Senator representing Osun East, Francis Fadahunsi, are also under active probe for similar offenses.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Police Anietie Okokon Iniedu, announced the development during a joint security press briefing at the National Counter-Terrorism Centre in Abuja on Tuesday.
Iniedu emphasized that making inflammatory remarks, particularly concerning electoral processes, is a severe criminal offense under Nigerian law.
He vowed that the police would fully execute their constitutional mandate to preserve public order, stating that the law will apply strictly no matter whose ox is gored.
The crackdown follows widespread outrage over viral video clips featuring the political actors.
Sainna Buba reportedly threatened to flog residents and cut off the hands of individuals who refuse to support the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Although Buba later defended his statement as figurative language aimed at tackling anti-party activities, human rights groups like Amnesty International strongly condemned the remarks as direct voter intimidation.
In similar vein, the Kuje Area Council Chairman, Danjuma Shekwolo, is being investigated for a video where he warned local residents to either vote for the APC or vacate the area.
Meanwhile, Senator Francis Fadahunsi faced questioning from senior detectives following a campaign video where he allegedly incited physical violence against members of the Accord Party.
Iniedu confirmed that he personally participated in the team that interrogated Senator Fadahunsi in Osun State.
The police high command further updated the public on security updates surrounding the August 15 Osun State governorship poll, noting that 154 suspects arrested for various electoral infractions remain in custody under rigorous investigation.
The Force has urged the public and prospective witnesses to cooperate fully with investigators.
They noted that a reluctance to provide official statements has historically hindered the successful prosecution of political actors who bypass democratic norms.
Security agencies concluded by cautioning all political stakeholders to refrain from hate speech as the 2027 election cycle begins to accelerate.
