WorldStage– The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has directed all its candidates across the country to commence campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a national statement issued on Friday, August 21, 2026, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, announced that the flag-off strictly aligns with the official electoral timeline authorized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The NDC leadership instructed its principal candidates to aggressively roll out localized political engagements, particularly asking it’s Presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to immediately kickstart nationwide consultations.
National Assembly, gubernatorial, and state House of Assembly candidates, according to the party, must coordinate with regional party stakeholders and the national secretariat to structure their campaign itineraries.
The party disclosed that structural layout compositions for various national campaign organs and committees have been finalized and will be officially inaugurated soon.
Amid concerns over political hostility, the NDC explicitly warned all candidates and grassroots mobilizers that campaign activities must remain strictly issue-based.
According to the party leadership, its campaign operations will be heavily guided by an ideology of peaceful engagement, stating clearly that the party has absolutely no room for abusive language, inflammatory rhetoric, or violence.
This directive aligns with the broader symbolic peace pledge signed by major contenders to prevent the standard “total war” mentality of previous cycles.
The NDC also clarified an ongoing administrative discussion with the electoral umpire regarding a prospective modification to the party’s official emblem. While a refreshed logo design has been reviewed during joint meetings with INEC officials, minor administrative protocols remain unresolved.
Consequently, the NDC has instructed all candidates and party chapters to exclusively utilize the existing logo—the distinct two-finger victory sign—for all branding, billboards, and campaign materials until further notice.
The opposition party’s immediate mobilization follows the commencement of the official campaign window declared by INEC under the new regulatory framework, with Presidential and National Assembly campaigns kicking off on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, and will run through January 15, 2027.
Governorship and state Assembly campaigns are set to officially open on September 9, 2026, and terminate on February 5, 2027.
INEC has slated the Presidential poll for January 16, 2027, followed by the Governorship and State Assembly elections on February 6, 2027.
With the spending thresholds for presidential candidates legally adjusted up to ₦10 billion under the revised Electoral Act, the NDC’s early directional push officially intensifies the competitive landscape for Nigeria’s upcoming political transition.
