WorldStage– The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have declared an indefinite, total, and comprehensive nationwide strike beginning at midnight on Friday, May 1, 2026.
The decision by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the two unions follows the expiration of their April 30 deadline for the Federal Government to conclude renegotiations of the 2009 FGN/University Non-Teaching Staff Agreement.
Union leadership, including SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, emphasized that members are to stay at home until further notice and that no concessions or skeletal services will be granted during the strike.
According to the two academic union bodies, the strike will be coming with total withdrawal of services across all federal and state universities, as well as inter-university centres.
Academic and administrative activities are expected to be paralyzed, affecting services such as registry, bursary, maintenance, security, and student hostels.
The unions cited several unresolved issues as grounds for the strike, including failed renegotiations, of which they accused government of failing to present a fresh offer on allowances after withdrawing a previous circular for a 30% increase in the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance.
They also cited stalled talks regarding improved conditions of service, the payment of outstanding salary increments, and the fair disbursement of ₦50 billion in Earned Allowances as another reason for the strike.
A final renegotiation meeting held on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, ended without a resolution acceptable to the unions.
