Fame can easily overshadow the person behind it, but Dolly Parton’s life was defined by something far greater than stardom. Her passing on August 25 at the age of 80 closes an extraordinary chapter in American music. Yet, it also invites us to look beyond the spotlight and reflect on what truly makes a life meaningful.
I join millions of fans around the world in mourning the loss of the Queen of Country Music, Dolly Rebecca Parton. My earliest introduction to her came through my father. Growing up, Saturday mornings sometimes came with the sound of his vinyl records playing through the house. Among them was Dolly. And among the songs I remember most was “Jolene.” Long before I understood the woman behind the voice, I knew the voice.
Years later, I would come to understand why the world found it so difficult to confine Dolly Parton to a single description. Singer. Songwriter. Actress. Businesswoman. Philanthropist. Humanitarian. She built a career spanning more than six decades and sold more than 100 million records worldwide. She wrote songs that crossed generations and genres. “Jolene.” “9 to 5.” “I Will Always Love You,” a song that found another extraordinary life through Whitney Houston. She became one of the rare artists recognised across country, pop, and rock music.
Purpose
Yet, when I think about Dolly today, I find myself thinking less about the records she sold than about the lives she touched. One of the greatest lessons from her life is that purpose does not always arrive in the form we expect. Dolly never had any biological children. She spoke openly about it. At one point, she reflected that perhaps God did not intend for her to have children so that “everybody’s children could be mine.” In a remarkable sense, that is exactly what happened. But to understand why books became one of the great gifts of her life, we should return to where her own story began. Dolly was born into a large family in rural Tennessee and grew up with very little materially. Her father, Robert Lee Parton, was unable to read or write. Dolly later spoke movingly about how proud he became of the Imagination Library, the literacy programme she founded in 1995 to send free books to young children. She has described the programme as a tribute to her father, whose inability to read shaped her understanding of what literacy could mean for a child’s future. There is something particularly beautiful about that part of her story.
Her father’s experience was part of why millions of other people’s children received books. And perhaps that is why this part of Dolly’s life feels especially personal to me. My father introduced me to Dolly through music. In another sense, her father helped introduce millions of children to books. Two fathers who never knew each other. Two very different lives. Yet both remind me of the quiet ways parents shape gifts that eventually travel far beyond themselves.
In 1995, Dolly created the Imagination Library, initially for children in Sevier County, Tennessee, where she grew up. What began as a local effort eventually expanded far beyond Tennessee and the United States, placing hundreds of millions of books into children’s hands. Think about that. A woman who never became a biological mother helped place books into the hands of millions of children she would never meet. There is something profoundly instructive about that. We sometimes measure people’s lives by what they did not have. No husband. No wife. No children. No particular title. No conventional version of success. Dolly’s life challenges that arithmetic. Sometimes what appears to be an absence becomes room for another form of purpose.
Motherhood itself is larger than biology. So is fatherhood. Our capacity to nurture another human being does not begin or end with whether that person carries our DNA. Some people raise children in their homes. Others help raise generations. Dolly did both in her own way through the nieces, nephews and younger relatives who surrounded her, and through millions of children whose first encounters with books were shaped by a woman they might never meet. And there is another part of her story that speaks deeply to me.
Marriage
Dolly Parton and Carl Dean married in 1966. They remained married until his death in March 2025, nearly 59 years later. Think about the contrast. Dolly became one of the most recognisable women in the world. Carl largely stayed away from public life. One lived beneath stage lights. The other largely chose privacy. And somehow, across nearly six decades, they protected something the world increasingly struggles to protect: a relationship that did not need constant public performance to prove that it existed. There is wisdom there, too. We live in an age when relationships are increasingly performed before audiences.
Anniversaries become posts. Vacations become content. Arguments sometimes become public announcements. Private affection becomes public evidence.
Dolly and Carl offered another possibility. Some of life’s most valuable things do not need an audience. Privacy itself helped protect what fame might otherwise have consumed. Carl died in 2025 at 82. Dolly followed less than eighteen months later. And now the world is left to measure her life. We could measure it in records, awards, concerts, films, businesses, money, and/or fame, but those are the least interesting measurements. Measure it instead in children who learned to love reading. Measure it in aspiring musicians who discovered that a woman born into poverty in rural Tennessee could write her way into history. Measure it in a marriage protected from the machinery of celebrity. Measure it in the causes she quietly supported. Measure it in the $1 million she contributed toward research connected to the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Measure it in generosity. Then something becomes clear. Dolly Parton did not simply build a successful career. She built a useful life. And there is a difference.
Success vs purpose
Success asks how far you went. Purpose asks who was better because you were here. Perhaps that is why her death feels personal even to people who never met her. Music has a strange ability to become attached to memory. A song begins playing, and suddenly, you are no longer where you are. You are home. You are young again. You remember Saturday mornings. You remember your father putting on a vinyl record. And somewhere from the speakers comes a woman from Tennessee singing about another woman named Jolene. That is how some people remain with us. Not because we knew them. Because somehow their gifts became part of our own stories. Dolly once wondered whether everybody’s children were meant to become hers. Perhaps they were. And perhaps there is a lesson in this for all of us. You do not need to touch everyone to change someone. You do not need to meet every person who eventually benefits from the seeds you plant. You do not need the life you initially envisioned to live a life of significance.
And you certainly do not need to have everything to give something. For those of us in Nigeria and across Africa, Dolly’s life leaves us with a question worth carrying home: What are we doing with whatever influence, wealth, talent, education, or opportunity life has placed in our hands? Legacy is not ultimately measured by how much we accumulate, but by how deliberately we use what we have to widen opportunity for people who may never know our names.
The question life eventually asks each of us is much simpler. What did you do with what you were given? Dolly was given a voice. She sang. She was given words. She wrote. She was given wealth. She shared. She was given influence. She used it. She was given children she would never meet. She sent them books. And she was given Carl. She loved him, quietly, for almost six decades.
Perhaps our parents never fully know how far the things they place in us will travel. Dolly’s father could not read the books his daughter would eventually send around the world. My father could not have known that those Saturday mornings playing Dolly’s records would one day become part of how I remember her. The vinyl eventually stops spinning. The song ends. But a life well lived keeps playing in other people’s lives. Thank you for the music, Dolly. And thank you, Dad, for introducing me to her.
