WorldStage– At least 25 people have been reportedly killed following a brutal overnight assault by gunmen on Bin-Per village, located in the Mangu Local Government Area of Nigeria’s central Plateau State.
The attack occurred late Monday night, August 17, 2026, caught residents by surprise while they were sleeping, and triggered widespread fears of reprisal violence.
Armed men carrying guns and machetes stormed the village, moving systematically house to house to attack residents.
Local officials and residents confirmed 25 fatalities, while witnesses report that women and children accounted for the vast majority of those killed.
Plateau State police spokesperson Alfred Alabo stated that security forces are deploying to the area to assess the situation and restore order.
The tragedy is the latest flare-up in a long-standing cycle of communal violence plaguing Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
The region frequently witnesses intense conflict between nomadic Fulani herders and settled farming communities over access to land, water, and resources. These disputes are further aggravated by deep-seated ethnic and religious divisions. Community leaders have heavily criticized the persistent violence, stating that the continuous destruction of homes and farmlands cannot continue to be treated as ordinary incidents.
