Iju Day 2024 was a grand celebration of unity, culture, and progress as the Iju community in Akure-North Local Government Area of Ondo State gathered to honour distinguished individuals for their invaluable contributions to the development and growth of the community.
The awards recognized prominent figures of Iju origin and individuals connected to the town who have dedicated themselves to fostering its advancement.
The prestigious ceremony took place on November 2, 2024, with honours bestowed under the esteemed guidance of Dr. Isaac Akin Oluwalade, National President of the Iju Progressive Union, and the traditional ruler, Oba Amos Farukanmi, the Okiti of Iju.
The event was a vibrant showcase of the town’s rich heritage, with traditional performances, speeches, and tributes to the honourees.
Speaking on behalf of the community, Dr. Oluwalade explained that the awards were a gesture of appreciation, acknowledging the lasting impact of the honourees’ efforts.
“The purpose of this award,” he noted, “is to recognize and appreciate the many ways in which these individuals have uplifted Iju. Their love for this community is evident in their actions, and this is our way of saying thank you.”
In his speech, he called on other indigenes to take inspiration from the honourees’ dedication and to contribute actively to the community’s growth.
“When you truly love your community, you will go to great lengths to see it develop,” Dr. Oluwalade emphasized.
“Today’s honourees have shown this love in numerous ways. I encourage our brothers and sisters to emulate Dr. Olumuyiwa Adu and others to keep the momentum of progress strong in Iju.”
One of the high points of the event was the conferment of the chieftaincy title Atunluse of Iju on Dr. (Barr.) Sylvester Olumuyiwa Adu, in recognition of his outstanding philanthropic contributions. Oba Amos Farukanmi praised Dr. Adu’s exemplary life and commitment, noting how his dedication has brought positive change to Iju.
“Dr. Adu and other awardees have shown admirable devotions to our community,” Oba Farukanmi said, as he conferred the title. “We honour him today and pray for his continued success and prosperity in his business and political endeavours.”
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Adu expressed his deep gratitude to the community leaders and the Iju Progressive Union for the honours bestowed upon him. He emphasized that his efforts for the development of Iju were driven purely by a desire to give back, without political motivations.
“I am profoundly grateful for this recognition,” he said. “This honour reflects the work I have been doing for our community, and I thank God for the opportunity to serve. With His grace, I will continue to do even more.”
Dr. Adu also seized the occasion to rally support for Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa in the upcoming November 16 gubernatorial election, describing him as a divinely appointed leader.
“I urge our people in Ondo State to support Governor Aiyedatiwa, a leader chosen to guide us towards a brighter future and end long-term political challenges.”
The event also featured remarks from other dignitaries.
The Ondo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Saka Yusuf Ogunleye, lauded the peace and progress evident in the community. He encouraged Iju indigenes to maintain unity as they continue striving toward further development.
The Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Sunday Abegunde (fondly known as ABENA), extended his congratulations to the community and its leadership, expressing his hope for continued growth and prosperity in Iju.
Mrs. Ebun Obasanmi, a notable guest, shared her pride in the recognition of Dr. Olumuyiwa Adu, Barr. Temilolu Adamolekun, and others for their selfless service. “It’s heartwarming to see their efforts being celebrated,” she remarked, “as they truly deserve these honors.”
Community leaders and stakeholders, including Ogunjemilehin Temitope, the Olu Otere of Otere land, and Ojo Mathew Olu of Ariko, expressed their gratitude to God for another successful celebration. They reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Oba Farukanmi and the Iju Progressive Union in driving forward the town’s development.
The Iju Day 2024 celebration not only honoured past achievements but also served as a call to action for indigenes to come together in building a brighter future for the community. As the festivities concluded, the sense of unity and shared purpose was palpable, underscoring a community ready to grow and thrive through collective effort and dedication.
