Ms Sally Suleiman, Special Adviser on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to the Governor of Edo, has condemned the gruesome murder of 16 travellers in the state.
This is contained in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Benin City
Suleiman strongly condemned the violent act, stressing that Edo had always been known for peace and hospitality.
The special adviser sympathised with the families of the maimed travellers reportedly going to Kano from Port Harcourt before they were intercepted in the state on suspicion of being kidnappers.
“This tragic incident is heartbreaking and unacceptable. Edo State is a land of peace, and such acts of violence should have no place in our society,” she wrote.
Suleiman also commended Gov. Monday Okpebholo for his swift intervention, including his visit to the scene of the incident and his firm directive for a thorough investigation.
“Our governor has shown true leadership by taking immediate action. I am confident that justice will be served, and the perpetrators of this heinous act will be held accountable,” she stated.
She extended her heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the recovery of the survivors who are currently receiving medical attention.
“As a state, we must stand together in these difficult times. Let us unite in peace and ensure that such a tragedy never happens again,” she urged.
Suleiman called on security agencies to intensify efforts in preventing mob violence and urged citizens to have faith in the justice system rather than resorting to jungle justice.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have arrested 14 suspects in connection with the killings, and investigations are ongoing to ensure justice is served.
