WorldStage– The average retail price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, rose to ₦1,532.93 per litre in April 2026, representing a 23.69 per cent increase compared to ₦1,239.33 recorded in April 2025, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The NBS also reported that the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas increased by 13.89 per cent on a month-on-month basis from ₦19,652.83 in March 2026 to ₦22,382.20 in April 2026.
The figures, released by the NBS on Friday, also showed that on a month-on-month basis, the average retail price of petrol increased by 18.97 per cent from ₦1,288.54 recorded in March 2026.
On a state-by-state analysis, the report showed that Yobe State recorded the highest average retail price for petrol at ₦1,599.05 in April 2026. Edo State followed with ₦1,595.74, while Bauchi State recorded ₦1,589.07.
Conversely, Niger State posted the lowest average retail price at ₦1,403.89, followed by Sokoto State at ₦1,404.16 and Katsina State at ₦1,406.28.
Meanwhile, the report also revealed that the average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas, increased by 13.73 per cent on a month-on-month basis to ₦8,706.93 in April 2026 from ₦7,655.73 recorded in March 2026.
According to the NBS, “On a year-on-year basis, the price rose by 10.42 per cent from ₦7,885.60 recorded in April 2025.”
The state profile analysis also showed that Lagos State recorded the highest average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas at ₦9,745.10. Nasarawa State followed with ₦9,451.70, while Bayelsa State recorded ₦9,422.74.
“Conversely, Anambra State recorded the lowest average price at ₦7,204.76, followed by Ondo State and Ogun State with ₦7,239.49 and ₦7,825.75 respectively.
“It said zonal analysis showed that the North-West recorded the highest average retail price for refilling a 5kg cylinder of cooking gas at ₦9,025.07, followed by the North-East at ₦8,847.16, while the South-East recorded the lowest price at ₦8,224.37.
Meanwhile, the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas increased by 13.89 per cent on a month-on-month basis from ₦19,652.83 in March 2026 to ₦22,382.20 in April 2026.
“On a year-on-year basis, the price increased by 10.43 per cent from ₦20,268.06 recorded in April 2025.
“State profile analysis showed that Katsina State recorded the highest average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas at ₦25,596.71. Kogi State followed with ₦24,558.25, while Gombe State recorded ₦24,438.97.
On the other hand, Ogun State recorded the lowest average price at ₦19,564.36, followed by Bauchi State at ₦20,178.87 and Anambra State at ₦20,511.90.
Analysis by zones showed that the North-West recorded the highest average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas at ₦23,276.95, followed by the North-Central at ₦22,865.29, while the South-East recorded the lowest average price at ₦21,060.92.
Zonal analysis further showed that the South-South zone recorded the highest average retail price of ₦1,566.76, while the North-West zone had the lowest average price at ₦1,508.81.
