WorldStage– Olusegun Mimiko, the former governor of Ondo State in the South-Western Nigeria has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
While his resignation has fueled significant speculation about a potential move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to align with President Bola Tinubu.
His current status and official alignment remain unconfirmed.
In a letter addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 7, Ondo West Local Government, Mimiko stated his departure was effective from April 10, 2026
He cited “strictly personal reasons” and a need to clarify his status following persistent inquiries.
“As you are very much aware, I have somewhat distanced myself from party activities for sometime. This stance afforded me a great deal of time to reflect and consult widely, upon which the decision to quit the PDP was taken.
“Let me add that I take the decision to resign my membership of the PDP without animosity toward anyone, and wish the Party well in its future endeavors,” he stated in the resignation letter.
There is widespread talk about him joining the APC, especially as several of his key political associates have already defected to the ruling party
Watchers of politics in Ondo State may not be altogether surprised by the formal exit of the two term governor from the PDP, as his followers had resigned to en-mass way back to support the election of the current Ondo Governor, Mr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.
Then, the core loyalists of Mimiko, like Hon Iranola Joseph Akinlaja, Hon Alaba Lad Ojomo, Engineer Gboye Adegbenro, Rt Hon Jumoke Akindele, Jide Adejuyigbe, Ms Taiwo Afilaka, Chief Mrs Funmilola Oluwadare, Hon Oladipupo Ajani, Com Solomon Adelegan, Comrade Femi Bosede, Hon Adesoji Ayenuro and Eni Akinsola among others, had joined the APC and subsequently worked for the election of Governor Aiyedatiwa.
Eni Akinsola, who served as Mimiko’s CPS, when asked to confirm said, “it is true that the former governor has formally turned in his resignation letter from the PDP,” but did not volunteer any further information.
Despite the rumors, Mimiko has not yet officially joined another party.
In past years, he has denied similar rumors, once describing reports of a move to the APC as “fake news.”
