WorldStage Newsonline– The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reiterated the pivotal role of data in driving a sustainable digital economy, emphasizing the need for safe, secure, and responsible data utilization.
This was the central theme at the recently concluded 2024 Digital Nigeria Innovation Challenge, an event aimed at fostering innovation and empowering Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.
Representing NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa , at the event, Mr. Oladejo Olawumi, Director of the Information Technology Infrastructure Solutions Department, stressed the importance of data sovereignty for Nigeria’s digital future. He noted that data security and privacy are critical to building a thriving digital economy that benefits individuals and businesses alike.
Highlighting the event’s significance, Olawumi said: “Data is the currency of the digital economy. It drives innovation, sustains technological advancement, and underpins a vibrant digital ecosystem. Prioritizing home-grown solutions ensures that Nigeria maintains control over its data resources while fostering a globally competitive digital sector.”
Supporting Innovation and Empowering Startups
The Digital Nigeria Innovation Challenge, organized by NITDA’s Office for Nigerian Digital Innovation (ONDI), provided a platform for tech entrepreneurs to showcase groundbreaking ideas.
The event aligns with the agency’s Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) 2.0, focusing on key pillars such as: Fostering digital literacy and talent cultivation; Supporting robust technological research ecosystems; Nurturing innovative and entrepreneurial ecosystems and Promoting inclusive access to digital infrastructure and services.
Inuwa encouraged participants to leverage the Nigeria Startup Act (NSA), which facilitates access to funding and partnerships with angel investors.
“The NSA is designed to help you transform ideas into viable solutions, ensuring that Nigerian startups have the resources and networks to thrive globally,” he explained.
Establishing “Innovation Nests” for Creativity and Collaboration
To further support indigenous innovation, NITDA announced plans to establish Innovation Nests in three states, with six additional centers to be developed by year-end. These state-of-the-art hubs will provide spaces for work, collaboration, relaxation, and networking with potential investors.
“These centers will inspire creativity and attract global investments, offering opportunities for our innovators to shine on the global stage,” Inuwa added.
Building a Collaborative Tech Ecosystem
In her opening remarks, Ms. Victoria Fabunmi, National Coordinator of ONDI, noted that the challenge aims to spotlight transformative ideas while fostering collaboration within Nigeria’s tech ecosystem.
“Participants have spent months identifying opportunities and gaps across the nation’s digital landscape. This event allows them to present innovative solutions that align with the Ministry’s blueprint pillars of Knowledge, Innovation, and Policy,” Fabunmi stated.
She emphasized NITDA’s unwavering commitment to advancing digital innovation through strategic initiatives, reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a leader in the global digital economy.

Inuwa concluded by affirming NITDA’s dedication to nurturing talent and celebrating innovation.
“Whether or not you win today, this platform is a step toward achieving your dreams.
