WorldStage— Senator Adams Oshiomhole has publicly accused Nigeria’s former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of divorcing his estranged wife, Jennifer Douglas, solely because he lost a presidential election.
Speaking on Monday at an All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign rally in Calabar, Cross River State, the Edo North senator leveled sharp criticisms against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain’s personal life and political motives.
Oshiomhole claimed that Atiku’s previous marriage to Jennifer, who hails from the South-East region, was politically motivated.
According to the former APC National Chairman, Atiku had actively used the union to secure political goodwill in the region, promising that their daughter would become Nigeria’s First Lady if he secured the presidency.
“Like somebody said the other day, Atiku went to the Southeast and said, ‘If I win the election, your daughter would be the First Lady,” Oshiomhole told the crowd.
He alleged that following Atiku’s failure to win the presidential race, the former Vice President subsequently ended the marriage.
The attack forms part of a broader political strategy by APC stakeholders to question Atiku’s ability to unify the nation.
Oshiomhole has previously labeled Atiku a “serial divorcee” who lacks the domestic stability required to govern a diverse household, let alone a country.
However, public records and past statements from Jennifer Douglas contradict Oshiomhole’s narrative.
Clarifying the split in a detailed public statement, Jennifer explicitly noted that Atiku’s political ambitions or subsequent marriages were not the cause of their separation.
Instead, she cited long-standing disagreements regarding her choice to stay in the United Kingdom to care for their children, alongside ongoing legal disputes over matrimonial properties located in Abuja and Dubai.
The Atiku Presidential Campaign Organization has fired back at Oshiomhole, dismissing his allegations as unfounded comments and fictitious claims engineered to draw undue public attention.
In a strongly worded response, the campaign described Oshiomhole’s remarks as irresponsible tantrums, countering that the senator lacks the moral authority to lecture anyone on marital sanctity while remaining silent on the public whereabouts of his own foreign wife.
The latest remarks add another dimension to the intensifying political exchanges ahead of the 2027 general elections, as APC and opposition figures increasingly trade personal and political allegations.
