WorldStage— All the six governorship candidates of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the North-East have rejected the appointment of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir Lawal, as the party’s regional leader.
The candidates, in a joint statement to national leadership and Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, declared they will not recognize Lawal.
Senator Dickson had assigned him to oversee regional campaigns and guidance following his recent defection from the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC).
The gubernatorial contenders argued that the move bypassed grassroots consultations and ignored stalwarts who built local support.
The candidates stated: “After due consideration, we have unanimously resolved not to recognise Engr. Babachir Lawal as the Leader of the NDC in the North-East, and we will not recognise him as such”.
They cautioned that unilateral choices risk undermining electoral traction ahead of the 2027 elections.
The protest was signed by flagbearers including Aishatu Dahiru Ahamed (Adamawa), Barr. Ibrahim Muhammad Kashim (Bauchi), Rear Admiral S. Kashim Ibrahim rtd. (Borno), Dr. Babayo Ardo (Gombe), Prof. Mohammed Sani (Taraba), and Ibrahim M. Shitu (Yobe), leaving party members awaiting a response from national leadership.
