WorldStage– The Imo State Police Command has launched a comprehensive investigation after unknown assailants murdered a police inspector deployed to the private residence of Barrister Rex Anunobi, a former Imo State Commissioner.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday at the politician’s home, throwing the local community into panic.
According to initial security reports from the scene, the attackers slipped into the compound undetected, ambushed the unsuspecting operative, and killed him on the spot.
Before fleeing the premises, the gunmen stole the officer’s official service rifle along with an undisclosed number of live rounds and his personal mobile handset.
A walkie-talkie and an empty ammunition magazine left behind by the killers were recovered from the crime scene by response teams.
The investigation has taken a crucial turn as police authorities declared the residence’s private security guard, identified simply as Genesis, wanted.
Investigators discovered that Genesis abruptly packed his personal belongings, switched off his mobile phone, and disappeared immediately after the attack.
Security officials suspect he may have acted as an insider informant or actively conspired with the killers to compromise the premises.
Following the attack, tactical operatives evacuated the inspector’s body to the Federal Teaching Hospital for an autopsy.
The State Police Command stated that it is employing all available forensic resources and intelligence networks to track down the fleeing security guard, identify the assailants, and recover the stolen police firearm.
Law enforcement has urged members of the public with any information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the nearest station immediately.
