WorldStage– Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has announced that his administration is taking concrete steps to implement the N70,000 transport allowance approved by the Federal Government for public workers.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Governor Idris disclosed that he has constituted a special committee under the supervision of the State Head of Service to work out the operational modalities.
The Federal Government introduced the N70,000 monthly transport intervention for a duration of six months—running from November 2026 to April 2027—to help public servants cope with surging commuting and living costs following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
Idris, a former labour leader, stressed his dedication to worker welfare and industrial harmony, noting that Kebbi aims to lead in adopting federal wage increments.
“I have said, time without number, that if the Federal Government increases workers’ benefits, Kebbi State will be among the first to implement it,” Idris stated.
He lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for introducing the ₦70,000 transport allowance as a temporary relief mechanism ahead of upcoming minimum wage negotiations.
The decision follows strong advocacy from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Kebbi State Chapter, led by Comrade Murtala Usman, who recently mobilised affiliate unions to push for the intervention to cover all categories of public workers, including local government employees and healthcare staff.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers has also expressed its full backing of the state’s prompt response.
The initiative responds to advocacy from the NLC Kebbi chapter and the NUT.
The development builds on earlier welfare interventions by the Kebbi State Government, which previously approved a ₦75,000 state minimum wage alongside a ₦17,650 auxiliary allowance for teachers.
The committee is set to finalize the rollout framework for employees across the state.
Beyond direct financial payouts, Governor Idris highlighted that his administration has regularised over 1,700 casual staff, hired 2,000 new teachers, and is constructing hundreds of housing units for civil servants, with the first batch scheduled for commissioning this December.
With the committee now active, state workers anticipate the commencement of the transport subsidy payments to mitigate the high cost of daily commuting.
