WorldStage– The 8th National Convention of nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), which officially commenced on Friday, March 27, 2026, at Eagle Square in Abuja, the Nigeria’s capital, has adopted the consensus mode for its elections.
The motion for adoption of the consensus mode was moved by Speaker Of House Of Representatives, Rt Hon Tajudeen Abbas and seconded by Governor Uba Sani following the arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.
The motion which gives power to the commencement of the convention also calls for the election of New members of the National Working Committee of the party in accordance with its constitution.
The party, according to it’s Secretariat adopted the consensus approach to elect its new national leaders in order to promote unity and reduce internal friction within the party.
A motion for the dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC) was moved shortly after the convention began.
The event aims to produce a new 25-member NWC, along with other national ex-officio members.
Over 8,453 delegates from across Nigeria are participating in the two-day event (March 27–28), with high-profile attendees including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, and 31 state governors.
Security is extremely tight at Eagle Square, with major access roads barricaded.
The Federal Government directed civil servants in nearby offices to work from home for the duration of the event.
Primary Goals: Beyond leadership elections, the convention, themed “Unity and Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,” serves as a strategic platform to set the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The APC National Convention 2026 continues through Saturday, March 28, with the final affirmation of the consensus candidate list.
