The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has summoned the Deputy Head of the U.S. Embassy, John Ginkel, following a partial freeze on U.S. weapons deliveries.
During the meeting, Deputy Foreign Minister Marjana Beza emphasised the “critical importance of continuing to deliver defence packages that had already been promised.’’
This is according to a statement released by the ministry.
She noted the need to strengthen Ukraine’s air defences.
Beza was acting on instructions from Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha.
Earlier, the Pentagon had announced a halt to deliveries of certain weapons including air defence missiles pledged under former U.S. president Joe Biden.
The move was attributed to concerns over diminishing U.S. weapons stockpiles.
Delays in arms deliveries would only encourage Russia to continue the war and not seek peace, it said.
Ukrainian officials warned that delays in arms shipments risk emboldening Russia to continue the war and avoid peace negotiations.
While expressing support for U.S. peace efforts, Ukraine emphasised that meaningful progress required strengthening its defence capabilities and applying “coordinated transatlantic pressure on the aggressor.’’
