WorldStage— The Chief of Staff to the President and Chairman of the Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill, Femi Gbajabiamila, has disclosed that the National Policing Bill is scheduled for presentation to President Bola Tinubu on September 3, 2026.
The timeline follows the committee’s inaugural meeting at the State House on Monday, August 3, 2026, with government setting a seven-week, milestone-driven timeline for drafting the highly anticipated National Policing Bill.
The legislative effort aims to establish a legal and operational framework to implement a dual policing system across Nigeria’s 36 states.
The approved legislative exercise spans a strict seven-week schedule running from July 27 to September 14, 2026, while the drafted Executive Bill is slated to be on President Tinubu’s desk on September 3, 2026.
Subject to executive approval, nationwide public consultations will immediately follow the initial draft review.
Following the public integration phase, the revised bill and supporting structural materials will be formally transmitted to the National Assembly for passage.
While the National Assembly has already advanced separate constitutional alterations to permit a dual policing system, Gbajabiamila emphasized that a constitutional amendment alone cannot operationalise state police.
The newly proposed National Policing Bill serves as the primary national legal mechanism to define operational standards, preserve national security, protect civil rights, and ensure financial sustainability across new state police services.
The drafting body comprises essential legal, security, and executive stakeholders, including the Attorney-General of the Federation, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, and representatives from the Nigeria Governors’ Forum.
