WorldStage– Contrary to media reports that Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, has been flown abroad to treat an undisclosed ailment, latest information emerged on Sunday that he is recuperating in his Abuja home after falling ill.
Sources also informed that there are no plans by President Bola Tinubu to replace him as being speculated.
A senior official in the Presidency who craved anonymity dismissed rumours that the minister suffered a stroke or had been flown abroad for treatment.
While admitting that the Minister is truly sick and a little serious, the official said he didn’t suffer any stroke as previously reported.
According to the official, the Minister is in his house and hasn’t been flown anywhere.
The source however said Edun might seek medical attention elsewhere if the doctors say that is necessary, but that it’s not true that he has a stroke.
“He doesn’t have a stroke, which is why we put it in the statement that he is indisposed,” the source stated.
Another official confirmed that Edun is receiving care from Nigerian doctors and may seek medical attention abroad if the need arises.
“He’s being attended to by Nigerian doctors.
“They’re still monitoring him. If he needs medical care outside Nigeria, he will go. But he’s still at home,” he said, adding, “There are no plans to replace him.“
Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the Minister is receiving medical care in Nigeria.
“Yes, he’s indisposed. Wale Edun is about 69 years old. He suddenly fell ill. As we are talking, he is in Nigeria. He is recuperating. He’s around,” Onanuga clarified.
Due to his indisposition, Edun did not lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 2025 Annual Meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C..
Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, led the delegation in his place.
The rumours and subsequent clarifications followed reports from some online media which had initially claimed Edun suffered a stroke and was flown abroad for treatment.
