WorldStage— As preparations for the 2027 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) gather momentum, prospective candidates across Nigeria have been advised to commence early preparations and avoid common pitfalls that could jeopardize their admission chances.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and various educational experts gave this warning as the countdown to the annual tertiary entrance examination begins.
Stakeholders emphasized that early preparation remains the single most effective strategy for mastering the extensive UTME syllabus.
Educational consultant Dr. Alabi Benson noted that candidates who start studying months in advance are far more likely to build the cognitive stamina required for the computer-based test (CBT).
“The UTME is a highly competitive examination where a single mark can determine whether a student secures a spot in preferred courses like Medicine, Law, or Engineering,” Benson said.
“Relying on last-minute ‘cramming’ has consistently proven to be a recipe for failure,” he further cautioned.
In addition to early revision, experts have identified several critical mistakes that candidates must consciously avoid during the registration and examination cycles.
These mistakes, according to them, include wrong subject combinations – selecting subjects that do not align with the institutional requirements for the chosen course of study, leading to automatic disqualification; careless data entry – discrepancies in names, dates of birth, and state of origin during registration that cause severe administrative bottlenecks during post-UTME screening; CBT technique deficiencies – poor time management and a lack of familiarity with computer-based testing interfaces, which lead to uncompleted exams; and neglecting the syllabus, by studying with outdated materials or ignoring the specific literature texts mandated by JAMB for the examination year.
To mitigate these risks, prospective candidates are urged to actively participate in mock examinations and utilize official JAMB CBT practice software.
These tools help students get used to the exam environment and improve their speed and accuracy.
With millions of candidates expected to vie for limited slots in Nigeria’s federal, state, and private tertiary institutions, the competition for the 2027 academic session will be intense.
Registration portals are expected to open in the coming months.
Candidates who act swiftly on this advice, align their study habits with the official syllabus, and meticulously verify their registration details will significantly boost their chances of securing admission into their dream institutions.
