WorldStage– The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in partnership with Interferry, has launched Africa’s first Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme to enhance safety, efficiency and professionalism.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said this in a statement on Monday in Lagos.
Emmanuel said the landmark initiative in Africa was set to revolutionise ferry safety practices, boost operational efficiency, and significantly elevate professional standards among industry operators.
He said the 18-month programme would feature mentorship from Interferry experts and facilitators from maritime institutions, companies and regulatory agencies across Nigeria.
“50 participants, including captains, engineers and safety officers, were selected after a verification exercise conducted on March 18.
“The programme, scheduled to begin in May 2026, will adopt a hybrid model combining online learning, virtual mentoring and monthly practical sessions”, he said.
He said that the key modules to be covered are ferry design and construction, safety management systems, maritime regulations, and maintenance techniques, both preventive and predictive.
He said the initiative reflected the Lagos State Government’s commitment to safer waterways and a globally competitive ferry transport system.
