WorldStage– Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign in the coming days to pursue his 2027 governorship ambition in Oyo State.
His planned exit follows a general presidential directive for all appointees with elective ambitions to step down to ensure a level playing field for upcoming primaries.
The decision follows a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, where the Minister presented a comprehensive report on his tenure and received the President’s consent and blessing to contest.
Adelabu intends to seek the gubernatorial mandate from Oyo State citizens for the 2027 election, having previously contested in 2019 and 2023.
While his media aide, Bolaji Tunji, confirmed the impending resignation on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Adelabu remains in office for a short transition period to conclude ongoing reforms.
During his final briefing of the President, Adelabu presented the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan, outlining efforts to stabilize power generation and strengthen transmission capacity.
The move comes at a critical time for the power sector, which has faced recent declines in generation due to gas supply constraints and pipeline repairs.
Adelabu contested as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate and lost to the incumbent, Governor Seyi Makinde. He again contested under the Accord Party (AP) after losing the APC primary, again losing to Makinde. He recently rejoined the APC and has explicitly stated his intention to win the state’s top seat, sometimes using the “Émi Lókàn” slogan to signal his readiness.
