WorldStage– The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu has said that the services provided by corps members in Lagos state are worth over N14 billion annually.
The NYSC DG made the disclosure when he paid a courtesy visit to the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the government house in Marina, Lagos.
He stated that corps members provide over N14 billion worth of services to the Lagos economy annually. The figure represents the estimated cost if the state had to hire full-time personnel to perform the work done by the corps members.
Key details from the DG’s statement include: Contribution valuation: Nafiu quantified the economic value of services provided by more than 44,000 corps members serving across Lagos.
Other details are about personnel deployment, which figure, is based on the professional capacities of corps members filling critical service gaps in the state.
These personnel, according to the NYSC boss, include, 333 medical doctors, 306 pharmacists, 274 nurses, and 7,188 teachers.
Lagos as top destination, the DG noted that Lagos is the most popular choice for corps members nationwide, largely due to its relative security.
Governor Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the valuable role corps members play in the state and pledged to invest an additional N5 billion into the next phase of the 10,000-capacity permanent NYSC orientation camp in Agbowa, Ikorodu.
