WorldStage– Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has declared the Ondo South Senatorial District seat vacant during the plenary session on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
The declaration follows the appointment of Senator Jimoh Ibrahim as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) in New York, rather than the International Maritime Organization.
Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, who formerly held the seat, has transitioned to a diplomatic role. He presented his Letter of Credence to UN Secretary-General António Guterres on April 20, 2026.
Akpabio has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election to fill the vacancy within 30 days, in accordance with Section 76(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended)
Although his ambassadorial confirmation occurred in December 2025, his formal accreditation as Nigeria’s UN envoy in April 2026 necessitated the final vacancy declaration to ensure the district remains represented.
