WorodStage– The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) has stepped up efforts to curb the use of fake motor insurance certificates and improve compliance with compulsory insurance laws by training officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to verify insurance policies and enforce existing regulations.
The Commission said the initiative, which began with a one-day training programme for officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command in Abuja, is aimed at reducing the number of uninsured vehicles on Nigerian roads, strengthening policy verification and improving public confidence in the insurance industry.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Insurance and Chief Executive Officer of NAICOM, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon said the partnership with the Police is crucial to protecting road users, eliminating fake insurance certificates and ensuring compliance with compulsory insurance policies.
He said public safety goes beyond crime prevention and includes protecting individuals, businesses and public institutions from the financial consequences of accidents and other unforeseen events through insurance.
According to him, the collaboration is in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025 and NAICOM’s mandate to deepen insurance penetration and compliance across the country.
Gam-Ikon noted that police officers, through their routine engagement with motorists and the public, are strategically positioned to promote adherence to compulsory insurance laws and enhance public awareness of the benefits of insurance.
During the training, participants received practical guidance on compulsory insurance requirements, procedures for verifying insurance policies, identifying genuine insurance certificates and the legal framework governing compliance with Motor Third-Party Insurance and other compulsory insurance policies.
NAICOM said the programme would also strengthen collaboration with law enforcement agencies as part of broader efforts to increase insurance awareness, discourage the use of fake insurance certificates and enhance the contribution of the insurance sector to Nigeria’s economic development and social stability.
The Commission urged police officers to champion insurance compliance and promote a culture that recognises insurance as a critical tool for protecting lives, property, investments and livelihoods.
