*Urges residents on greener environment
WorldStage– The Lagos State Government says it has planted 13,401 trees, representing 67 per cent of its 20,000-tree target for 2026.
Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known on Tuesday during the commemoration of the 2026 Lagos State Tree Planting Day held at Comprehensive High School, Ajara, Badagry.
The commemoration has the theme: “Trees for Lagos: Our City, Our Responsibility”.
Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr Babatunde Hunpe, urged residents to embrace tree planting, support greener and sustainable environment.
He said that environmental sustainability required collective action, as rapid urbanisation continued to pose challenges such as flooding, rising temperatures and the depletion of green spaces.
The governor described tree planting as one of the most effective and affordable nature-based solutions to climate change.
“The remaining trees to meet the 20,000 target will be planted during the rainy season,” he said.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, described the exercise as a practical response to climate change, erosion and environmental degradation.
Wahab described every tree planted as an investment in cleaner air, healthier communities and a more sustainable future.
He added that all local governments and local council development areas had been designated as tree custodians responsible for nurturing the planted trees.
Also, the Vice Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Mr Akeem Adeyemi, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to a cleaner and greener Badagry through sustained environmental initiatives.
Adeyemi said the council chairman, Mr Babatunde Hunpe, had initiated the ongoing beautification of the Badagry Roundabout and the enforcement against unauthorised structures around the historic gateway.
He urged residents, schools, corporate organisations and community groups to support the campaign by planting and nurturing trees.
