WorldStage— Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, has approved the appointment of Professor Amadike Ugbogu as the 9th substantive Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU).
The announcement was made public on Saturday, October 31, 2026, signaling a fresh chapter for the state’s premier tertiary institution.
According to an official press release signed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the university’s Governing Council, Rt. Hon. Agwu U. Agwu, the appointment takes effect from November 1, 2026.
The decision followed a critical recommendation by the Governing Council during its 161st regular meeting held on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
Governor Otti, exercising his statutory powers as the Visitor to the University, subsequently ratified the council’s choice.
Professor Ugbogu, a distinguished academic and Professor of Biochemistry, steps into the leadership role with an extensive background in research and institutional administration.
He succeeds Professor Ndukwe James Okeudo, who was appointed precisely two years prior, on November 1, 2024, to lead what the state government termed a “rescue mission” aimed at stabilizing the university.
In a separate statement issued by the university community, the outgoing administration of Professor Okeudo was highly commended for restoring administrative transparency and clearing longstanding academic and graduation backlogs.
The council noted that Okeudo’s tenure successfully restored institutional sanity, providing a robust blueprint for transformation that the incoming Vice-Chancellor is expected to build upon.
The appointment of Professor Ugbogu is widely seen as a continuation of Governor Otti’s strategic reforms in the state’s education sector.
Since assuming office, the Governor has consistently prioritized structural upgrades and merit-based leadership within Abia State’s tertiary institutions.
Stakeholders, including the university Senate, staff, and student bodies, have expressed high expectations for the incoming Vice-Chancellor. Professor Ugbogu is tasked with advancing the institution’s global academic standing, fostering cutting-edge research, and maintaining the administrative discipline institutionalized by his predecessor.
As the countdown ends and the transition takes full effect, the entire ABSU community looks forward to a smooth leadership hand-over and sustained academic growth under Ugbogu’s guidance.
