APC National Chairman’s challenge to government officials heats up political atmosphere in Abuja

WorldStage– National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, late July 2026 in Abuja delivered a stark ultimatum to government officials. “You cannot hide behind the claim of being a technocrat to avoid your political responsibilities,” Yilwatda stated. “If you accept a political appointment, you must also play your role as a politician,” Yilwatda had declared while speaking to the Progressive Local Government Chairmen’s Forum, asserting that political appointees must actively mobilize grassroots support for the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections or vacate their offices.

The declaration has significantly opened another vista of political atmosphere in Nigeria’s federal capital as this directive targets a common fixture in Nigerian governance: the “pure technocrat” who manages a portfolio in Abuja while remaining detached from partisan politics.

By ordering local government chairmen to monitor and report inactive appointees, Yilwatda tied state patronage directly to electoral performance.

His statements have spark a vital debate on the balance between party loyalty, professional competence, and electoral accountability in Nigeria.

Yilwatda’s stance reflects the pragmatic realities of Nigeria’s political system. In a mass-membership party like the APC, state power relies entirely on the ability to turn out voters across thousands of wards. From the party leadership’s perspective, political appointments are not merely administrative roles; they are rewards for party building and tools for future mobilization.

This view is strongly supported within the party framework. Hadiza Bala-Usman, Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, reinforced the chairman’s position by stating, “Nobody should work hard to win elections while others stroll in to collect appointments and hide behind being technocrats.”

This transactional approach views governance and electioneering as inseparable. When an administration faces economic and social challenges, it expects its appointees to serve as public defenders of its policies. An appointee who stays quiet during tough reforms to protect their personal reputation is seen by the party as a political liability.

While Yilwatda’s directive makes tactical sense for party survival, it presents clear risks for effective public administration.

Nigeria faces complex economic challenges that require specialized, data-driven management rather than partisan rhetoric. Enforcing a strict loyalty test for public office risks sidelining highly qualified professionals who prefer to remain non-partisan. If technical competence is treated as secondary to political mobilization, critical sectors like economic planning, tech innovation, and healthcare may suffer from sub-optimal leadership.

Also, turning state officials into full-time campaign operatives risks diverting public resources toward partisan goals. When a minister or director-general prioritizes ward-level mobilization over policy execution, the efficiency of public service delivery inevitably declines.

Yilwatda’s message introduces a different perspective on accountability. In traditional democratic theory, accountability means a government delivering public goods like security, roads, and stable prices to its citizens.Yilwatda, however, frames accountability as an internal obligation to the party structure.

By directing local government chairmen to monitor federal officials, he sets up a system where an appointee’s success is judged by their local party standing rather than their official performance.

This dynamic places considerable pressure on appointees. A minister might design successful national programmes, but if they fail to finance or attend local party meetings, they risk being labelled “politically zero in their ward” and replaced. This shifts institutional focus away from broad national development toward targeted local patronage.

Yilwatda’s declaration signals a hardening stance within the APC as it prepares for the 2027 elections. By announcing that future appointments will be strictly tied to formal party membership, the chairman is drawing clear lines for both internal allies and external cross-party partners. This directly impacts the broader political landscape, including figures from opposition parties currently serving in the administration.

Yilwatda noted that individuals operating outside the formal party structure create complications for long-term cohesion. “If you are a technocrat, go and be a consultant,” he remarked, emphasizing that governing roles belong to committed party members.

In response, opposition groups like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have criticized this model, arguing for a more balanced governance structure that actively utilizes non-partisan expertise.

This clash highlights two competing visions for Nigeria’s executive branch: one based on a broad coalition of talent, and another built on disciplined party loyalty.

As Nigeria navigates this political cycle, the core challenge remains finding a workable balance between political loyalty and administrative competence.

A political party must maintain its organizational strength to win elections and implement its manifesto. At the same time, the state requires skilled governance to meet the basic needs of its citizens. Professor Yilwatda’s firm instructions have made the terms of service clear for current officials.

In the modern Nigerian political environment, holding office requires actively managing both policy execution in the boardroom and political mobilization at the grassroots. How appointees balance these twin demands will shape both the country’s governance and the outcome of the 2027 elections.

But for now, tongues are wagging on the incursion of Yilwatda’s romance with the new political administration philosophy and the consequences it’s likely to provoke, whether good or unhealthy for the country’s polity.
