The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, also known as Taskforce, says it has arrested 33 suspected criminals during a fresh enforcement operation.

The operation was conducted across several locations in the Lagos metropolis, including Victoria Island, Obalende and the Lekki-Epe Expressway axis.

The Taskforce Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, confirmed the arrests in a statement signed by the agency’s spokesperson, Mr Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, on Monday in Lagos.

Akerele said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal activities and environmental nuisance.

He said the exercise aligned with the THEMES Plus Agenda of the Lagos State Government.

“The early morning operation targeted street urchins, suspected drug addicts and peddlers, illegal commercial motorcyclists, street traders, illegal ticket touts and other suspected criminals,” he said.

According to him, officers carried out the operation at Ikate Bus Stop, Marwa Bus Stop and Muri Okunola Park in Victoria Island.

He said other locations included Obalende Underbridge, Law School Junction and adjoining areas along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

“The operation led to the arrest of 33 suspects, while officers recovered substances suspected to be Tramadol, Indian hemp, Colorado, marijuana and cannabis,” Akerele said.

He added that dangerous weapons, including scissors and cutlasses, were also recovered during the operation.

The chairman said normalcy had been restored in all the areas affected by the enforcement exercise.

Akerele reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to making Lagos unsafe for criminal elements and restoring order across the state.

“There is no room for criminality in Lagos State. Those engaged in criminal activities should either desist or relocate.

“We remain committed to enforcing the laws of the state and ensuring that residents continue to enjoy a safe, secure and orderly environment,” he said.

The chairman directed officers to sustain the enforcement drive and intensify efforts to tackle criminality across the state.

He said the agency had recorded success in curbing illegal ‘Omotaku’ operations on Lagos roads.

Akerele reiterated the Taskforce’s commitment to intelligence-driven enforcement operations aimed at maintaining law and order across Lagos State.

Reps committee requests I-G to provide Adeyemi, 13 others for clarifications on PFIPC

Investigation

By EricJames Ochigbo

Abuja, July 27, 2026 (NAN) The House Committee probing the establishment and operations of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), has requested the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu to provide the agency’s Director-General, Mr Adeyemi Adeniyi on July 29.

The committee also ruled that 13 civil servants across the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Office of the Accountant General of the Federation (OAGF) and the Office Head of Service should appear to explain their roles on Wednesday July 29.

The committee made the request at a public hearing over the activities of the agency on Monday in Abuja.

The committee ruled that Adeniyi should be brought to further clarify issues on alleged forgery concerning the establishment and operations of the council.

The Chairman of the committee, Rep. Yusuf Gagdi (APC-Plateau) said that in view of the fact that names of individuals and agencies of government had been mentioned, the committee needed both them and Adeniyi for further clarifications.

“We will need them to confirm some documents for us in such a way that it will not undermine the ongoing investigation to enable us submit our report on time.

“In view of the fact that names of some patriotic Nigerians have been mentioned, agencies have been mentioned, documents have been said to be mutilated; for clarity of our findings and recommendations, the committee resolves that the Inspector-General of Police do kindly bring Mr Adeyemi Adeniyi and the persons mentioned on Wednesday July 29,” he said.

In his representation, the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr Shamsudeen Ogunjimi explained that the first contact between the council and his office was in November 2024.

He said that there was a letter from the State House directing the OAGF to create administrative code, Single Treasury Account (TSA) and open foreign currency accounts for the agency with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

He said that the letter also directed that budgetary provisions should be made for the council in the 2026 Appropriation Bill.

Ogunjimi said that he declined the request for TSA account as the council did not meet the necessary requirements, but approved the other accounts for inflow only pending the completion of documentation process.

The accountant general said that the council also wrote to the OAGF requesting for self accounting status and that, after an internal committee verification, it was granted for six month pending when all requirements were met.

He said that the council also request for the deployment of five members of treasury staff but only three were granted by the OAGF.

Ogunjimi said that it was later discovered that all the letters from the State House to the OAGF were fake and that the agency already absorbed two treasury staff members deployed to the former Office of the Chief Economic Adviser to the President.

He told the committee that all the members of staff involved in the processing of these documents are currently  facing internal disciplinary actions and further actions would be taken after police investigations.

The panel adjourned hearing to Wednesday July 29

Lagos varsity workers threaten strike over ₦50,000 palliative

Palliative

By Henry Oladele

Lagos, July 27, 2026 (NAN) The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Lagos State-owned universities has issued the state government a seven-day ultimatum to pay workers’ promised ₦50,000 palliative.

The unions gave the ultimatum on Monday during a news conference at the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo campus.

JAC comprises the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

The affected institutions are LASU, Lagos State University of Education, Lagos State University of Science and Technology and Lagos State University College of Medicine.

Speaking for the unions, ASUU-LASU Chairman, Prof. Ibrahim Bakare, said Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the ₦50,000 palliative for Lagos workers on May 1.

Bakare said workers in state-owned universities were excluded from the payment in spite of an official circular indicating their inclusion among beneficiaries.

He said workers in the mainstream civil service had received the payment, while university employees remained excluded.

According to him, the unions delayed public action while verifying the situation and engaging university managements and relevant government officials.

Bakare said the vice-chancellors had forwarded the financial implications of the payment to the state government for approval.

He said the unions also wrote to the governor, deputy governor and relevant ministries, including Tertiary Education, Establishments and Training.

However, he said the responses received were vague and failed to demonstrate a commitment to implementing the governor’s promise.

Bakare said the unions consequently resolved to issue the seven-day ultimatum after exhaustive consultations across the affected institutions.

He urged the government to act before the ultimatum expired to prevent disruption of academic activities.

“We are men and women of peace, but our members have lost patience because of the continued delay,” he said.

Bakare warned that failure to meet the demand would compel the unions’ congresses to determine their next line of action, including an indefinite strike.

He said prevailing economic hardship had worsened university workers’ plight, making the palliative particularly urgent.

The ASUU chairman also urged the state government to implement agreements reached between the Federal Government and ASUU, SSANU and NAAT.

He said several state-owned universities in Ekiti and Osun had implemented similar agreements, while Lagos had yet to do so.

Bakare said the agreements took effect from Jan. 1, 2026, leaving Lagos State owing workers seven months’ arrears.

He also urged the government to fulfil its promise to release staff buses to ease transportation challenges confronting university workers.

Bakare further appealed for the resolution of the outstanding 20 per cent welfare issue discussed during previous negotiations with the state government.

He said prompt implementation of agreements and improved staff welfare would strengthen industrial harmony and productivity across the universities.

Also speaking, NASU-LASU Chairman, Mr Obafemi Sanni, accused the state government of adopting a lackadaisical approach to implementing agreements affecting tertiary institutions.

Sanni said the unions had exhausted dialogue and warned that failure to respond before the ultimatum expired would leave them with no option but to embark on indefinite industrial action.
