WorldStage– The schoolchildren, teachers and principal abducted by suspected bandits in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have been rescued, ending weeks of anxiety over their fate, according to Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga .
They were 46 pupils, teachers and the school principal kidnapped on May 15 when heavily armed gunmen stormed the Ahoro-Esiele community in Oriire Local Government Area, sparking nationwide outrage and concern.
Onanuga who confirmed the rescue on Thursday through his ‘X’account, stated that the victims regained their freedom through the coordinated efforts of Nigeria’s security agencies.
Onanuga said, “in the course of the rescue operation, eight of the kidnappers were arrested and are now in DSS custody, while some of them were neutralised.
“There was no quid pro quo in the rescue as one of the terrorists, a kingpin, that the kidnappers demanded his release, is being prosecuted for his atrocities. The security agencies will give full account soon.”
Further details on the rescue operation and the condition of the victims are expected.
