January 19: What MLK Day should ask Nigeria

Martin Luther King

By Ebuka Ukoh

Monday, January 19, was the 39th anniversary of MLK Day, a U.S. federal holiday on the third Monday of January. It’s a memorial for civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy, established in 1986 after a long campaign. A 1994 legislation designating it a National Day of Service for volunteering, making it a unique day for community improvement, reflection on racial equality, and celebrating his advocacy for nonviolence.

Martin Luther King Jr. does not belong to America alone. He belongs to every society still negotiating the distance between power and justice. MLK Day should not sit in Nigeria as borrowed nostalgia. It should function as a mirror. Not of who America became or is becoming, but of what change demands anywhere injustice survives.

King did not inherit a just system. He confronted one designed to exclude him. He did not wait for permission. He did not hold office. He commanded no police force, no treasury, no army. Yet he altered laws, shifted institutions, and reoriented a nation’s conscience. He proved a dangerous truth. Moral clarity can outgrow political power.

Many Nigerians wait for saviours with titles. King reminds us that movements do not begin in offices. They begin in conviction. When citizens outsource justice to politicians alone, injustice enjoys long life.

The cost of speaking when it is dangerous

We celebrate King today because time has made his courage safe. When he lived, courage was treated as a threat. The state surveilled him. Jailed him. Discredited him. Threatened him. Then killed him. Power rarely applauds dissent in real time.

This matters in Nigeria. We punish voices that inconvenience authority, then honour them later when their courage no longer disturbs comfort. We criminalise protest, question motive, and call justice agitation disorder. King’s life exposes this habit. If your courage attracts no cost, you are likely not close to power.

The dream was not sentiment. It was structure

King’s dream did not float on poetry. It rested on discipline. Organisation. Negotiation. Pressure. Law. He marched, but he also strategised. He prayed, but he also drafted demands. He disrupted, but he also built coalitions. He understood that justice requires systems, not speeches.

Nigeria struggles here. We love rhetoric. We struggle with follow-through. We celebrate declarations while institutions decay. King’s legacy corrects this. Dreams fail without structure. Protest without planning exhausts itself. Hope without systems becomes ritual.

Why performance politics fails justice

King rejected performance. He refused symbolic inclusion without material change. He insisted morality must inconvenience power. That insistence matters in a country where governance often performs for cameras while communities wait for presence.

Justice does not arrive through ceremonies. It arrives through schools that work, hospitals that care, courts that protect, police that serve, and laws that apply evenly. King understood this. Optics without reform delay freedom.

The power of the collective

Nigeria has lived this truth before. June 12 did not survive because one man stood alone. MKO Abiola became a symbol, but it was the collective courage of journalists, labour unions, students, market women, clergy, and ordinary citizens that turned a stolen mandate into a national conscience. Many paid dearly. Some paid with their lives. Yet the persistence of collective pressure outlasted decrees, intimidation, and propaganda. Years later, the state itself was forced to acknowledge what the people already knew. That democracy does not advance because power permits it. It advances because citizens insist together.

Nigeria learned this lesson even earlier, during the anti-colonial struggle. Independence was not handed to a single hero standing at a podium. It was forced into being by collective pressure. Teachers who educated against odds. Trade unions that organised strikes. Journalists who published in defiance of censorship. Students who protested. Traditional rulers who resisted quietly. Clergy who preached dignity. Farmers and traders who withdrew consent from colonial authority. Figures like Nnamdi Azikiwe and Obafemi Awolowo became symbols, but symbols only endure when a people move together. Independence arrived not because the colonial state suddenly found generosity, but because collective resolve made continued domination untenable. Freedom came when ordinary Nigerians decided, together, that injustice had become too costly to sustain.

King did not walk alone. Churches organised. Students mobilised. Workers boycotted. Ordinary people endured loss together. Collective discipline moved mountains, individual brilliance could not.

Nigeria needs this memory. Our victories will not be individual. Fragmented courage weakens pressure. Collective action multiplies it. When people align across class, region, and belief, injustice loses cover.

King’s greatest lesson may be this. No one frees themselves alone. Freedom is built by people willing to risk together.

What MLK Day should ask Nigeria

MLK Day should not ask Nigerians to admire a man. It should ask, “What are we willing to risk together?”

Justice does not wait for perfect leaders. It waits for prepared citizens. King shows us that clarity plus courage plus collective action can bend even stubborn systems.

That lesson remains unfinished business.

*Mr Ukoh, an alumnus of the American University of Nigeria, Yola, and PhD student at Columbia University, writes from New York.
