The Federal Government of Nigeria will mark the 2018 World Water Day on 22nd March, 2018. It is an annual event celebrated all over the world on the same date.
In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as the first World Water Day. 23 years on, World Water Day is celebrated around the world every year, shining the spotlight on a different issue.
It’s a day to celebrate water. It’s a day to make a difference for the members of the global population who suffer from water related issues. It’s a day to discuss for how we manage water for the future.
This year’s World Water Day theme is: “Nature for Water”. It will afford us the opportunity to explore how we can use nature to overcome the water challenges of the 21st century.
As we are aware, environmental damage, together with climate change, is driving the water-related crises we see around the world. Also Floods, drought and water pollution are all made worse by degraded vegetation, soil, rivers and lakes. When we neglect our ecosystems, we make it harder to provide everyone with the water we need to survive and thrive.
Drawing from the very vital need to manage water for the future, and in conformity with global practice, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources has lined up activities to mark this year’s World Water Day. The activities include; press briefing, sensitization walk (float) which is scheduled to hold on Wednesday 21st March, 2018 at 8:00am. The exercise is expected to take off from the Federal Secretariat and to terminate at NTA Headquarters, Area 11 and a symposium on the 22nd March, 2018 at NAF Conference Centre by 9:00 am. We will wrap up the day’s activities with an exhibition of various water related products, and projects in which the Federal Ministry of Water Resources have made tremendous landmark achievements
The Honourable Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman H. Adamu (FNSE) will be represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Musa Ibrahim at the event. Directors and other stakeholders in the water sector will also participate in all the activities.
