WorldStage– The Federal Government has temporarily opened Section 1 of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway to the public.
The 47-kilometer stretch, running from the Ahmadu Bello Way junction in Victoria Island to the Eleko village junction, was opened on Friday, December 12, 2025.
The opening is to ease the difficult commuting experience and traffic congestion in the Lekki-Ajah corridor, particularly during the festive season.
The initial section available for use is 47.47 kilometers long.
The opened section is a rigid-pavement dual-carriage highway featuring six lanes, streetlights, drainage systems, culverts, and median barriers.
While the section is temporarily open, the full completion of Section 1 is projected for the end of the second quarter of 2026.
The entire Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a 700-kilometer legacy project designed to connect nine coastal states, aiming to boost economic activities and improve interstate connectivity across the region.
The temporary access is expected to provide significant relief to thousands of commuters ahead of the holidays.
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, speaking on the temporary opening stated that the highway will be temporarily opened in accordance with President Bola Tinubu’s directive.
