WorldStage Newsonline– The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans for the reintegration of the Niger Delta Amnesty Program beneficiaries back into the society.
Presidential Amnesty coordinator, Prof Charles Dokubo said during the Inauguration of Operational Review Committee of Presidential Amnesty Programme in Abuja that the focus was on reintegration but not to probe past leadership of Amnesty program.
“Whatever problem it has is not my problem but for the government,” he said.
He noted that the newly inaugurated committee will assist the Federal Government to begin the process of charting a new course for the Amnesty Programme, adding that the committee will help to review handover note and the brief submitted by previous departmental heads.
The coordinator said after going through the handover notes and brief of departmental heads which contain of words and figure, it was noticed that the document left lots of questions unanswered.
On whether the amnesty programme can accommodate any Boko haram who got amnesty, he said, the amnesty was regional programme from Niger Delta and that the Boko Haram emanates from a region that government may decide to set up amnesty for it.
“The amnesty programme is a homegrown Disbarment Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) Programme. Documented finding have since shown that no two DDR programme anywhere in the world are the same,” he said.
“That is why we must continue to do all that is within our powers and collective competences to improve this programme based on lessons we have so far learnt.
“The committee has two weeks to compel its assignment and has my approval to coopt further deemed necessary to undertake this assignment.”
The inaugurated review committee includes four external, Professor Ayibaemi Spiff; Chief Otonye Amachree; Mr. Unyime Eyo and Ms. Azizat Mohammed.
Among the committee are four officials from amnesty office that include, Director of Finance and Account; Director of Procurement, to serve as the Chairman of the committee; Director of Administration; Head of Audit and Head of Administration, who will serve as the Secretary of the committee.
