WorldStage– The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have inaugurated a Joint Committee on the Enforcement of Compulsory Third-Party Motor Insurance.
The event, held at NAICOM Headquarters in Abuja was seen as a major milestone in implementing the Nigerian Insurance Industry Reform Act (NIIRA) 2025, aimed at protecting motorists, accident victims, and the wider public through improved insurance regulation and enforcement.
Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, commended the FRSC for its collaboration and leadership, noting that the partnership would bring tangible benefits to Nigerians. These, he said, include the effective enforcement of compulsory Third-Party Motor Insurance, the integration of insurance and vehicle registration databases, better protection and compensation for accident victims, and wider public education on insurance obligations and consumer rights.
Omosehin emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to reform key sectors for inclusive national development.
In his remarks, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, mni, lauded the partnership as a model of inter-agency synergy that would not only improve enforcement but also enhance the welfare of road users. He assured that the FRSC would leverage technology, data sharing, and field operations to ensure effective implementation nationwide.
“This collaboration will help reduce road crashes, ensure prompt compensation for victims, and reinforce public trust in government institutions,” Mohammed said, adding that the FRSC remains fully committed to sustaining the initiative.
Presenting the Committee’s Terms of Reference, Deputy Commissioner for Insurance, Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, outlined its key mandates, which include: Enforcing compulsory Third-Party Motor Insurance nationwide; Reducing the number of uninsured vehicles in Nigeria; Ensuring prompt compensation and medical support for accident victims; Promoting insurance awareness and consumer protection; Enabling real-time verification of insurance status through digital integration; Supporting microinsurance for commercial drivers and passengers; and Strengthening emergency response during the “golden hour.”
The Committee, co-chaired by senior officials of both agencies with NAICOM serving as the Secretariat, is expected to coordinate joint field operations, public sensitization campaigns, and continuous policy evaluation to boost compliance and consumer confidence.
In his closing remarks, Omosehin reaffirmed NAICOM’s commitment to sustained collaboration, saying:
“This partnership is not a one-off event. We are open to continuous feedback, regular evaluation, and the integration of new ideas as we move forward. Fewer road accidents, more insured motorists, and stronger public confidence in insurance will be among the key outcomes.”
The event concluded with a joint declaration by the Commissioner for Insurance and the Corps Marshal, officially launching the NAICOM-FRSC Joint Committee, followed by a commemorative group photograph with senior executives and committee members.
