Tecno, a Chinese phone manufacturer has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) for a project aimed at refurbishing a local football pitch in Lagos.
The Managing Director, Transsion Holdings, Chidi Okonkwo, signed the MOU at the office of the LSSC Director-General in Lagos.
Tecno mobile is a Chinese mobile phone manufacturer based in Shenzhen, China. It was established in 2006. It is a subsidiary of Transsion Holdings.
Okonkwo said that the signing marked the beginning of TECNO’s commitment to transforming underutilised fields into state-of-the-art training centres.
According to him, the project aims at revitalising 100 football pitches across Africa, with Lagos being the first beneficiary.
Okonkwo said that these efforts would transform overlooked grounds into vibrant, safe spaces where young footballers could hone their skills and chase their dreams.
“The training centre will nurture raw talent into future stars, and provide underserved communities with a platform to achieve their potential.
“Lagos, the City of Aquatic Splendour, plays a pivotal role in this ambitious initiative.
“The signing of this MOU is a declaration of not only interest but also a commitment from TECNO.
“Just like our mantra, TECNO will stop at nothing to ensure that every Nigerian and Lagos talent is empowered to fulfil their potential through technology and impactful campaigns such as this.
“Sparked by the triumph and enthusiasm of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, this project demonstrates TECNO’s belief in the power of football to inspire and unite communities,’’ he said.
He added that as the first of many such initiatives across Africa, the project was setting the stage for impactful changes that would resonate beyond the football pitch.
The Tecno boss said that its commitment to enhance football infrastructure reflected a genuine effort to bring about meaningful transformation, one pitch at a time.
He said that the project embodied TECNO’s dedication to impactful change through technology and community-driven campaigns.
Okonkwo stressed that the journey had just begun with the MOU signing, adding that TECNO was paving the way for a future where young talents from underserved communities could shine brightly.
The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, expressed delight in the project.
Fatodu said: “Lagos helps dreams come alive and this gesture from TECNO is giving flight to the dreams of stardom of the average Lagos boy or girl who wants to be the next Victor Osimhen or Asisat Oshoala.”
The signing ceremony was witnessed by key stakeholders, members of the Lagos State Sports Commission, and various government agencies.
