WorldStage– The Lagos State Government has announced the indefinite postponement of the planned rehabilitation of the Lekki–Ajah corridor.
The project was originally slated to begin on November 15, 2025, and run for eight months through July 2026.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the government did not give specific reasons for the delay.
However, it noted that preliminary activities, including site preparation, will continue until the end of November 2025.
The decision comes amid widespread concerns from residents and commuters who feared the project’s initial timing would worsen traffic during the peak “Detty December” season Lagos’ busy period marked by heavy movement, events, and festive activities.
Reports indicate that many residents have welcomed the postponement, relieved that the works will no longer coincide with the city’s high-demand travel period, which could have significantly disrupted daily commutes and holiday plans.
A new commencement date has yet to be announced. The government previously held stakeholder engagements to address traffic management strategies for similar road projects across the state.
While the rehabilitation remains a critical part of Lagos’ broader infrastructure upgrade efforts, the latest decision reflects the administration’s responsiveness to public feedback, particularly regarding project timing and potential mobility disruptions.
