WorldStage Newsonline– Senator Mustapha Khabeeb (Jigawa South West) has called for palliative support to Laya town in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State following a recent windstorm that ravaged the area.
Calling for the palliative support through a motion tagged “Urgent Need to provide palliative support to Laya Town in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State” he moved before the Senate on Thursday during plenary, the red chamber agreed with him that the windstorm, which was accompanied by a heavy rainfall, caused widespread destruction of houses, farmlands, schools as well as injuries and loss of lives.
Noting that Laya community experienced a devastating windstorm on Thursday, May 16, 2024, the Senate stated it was aware the windstorm further resulted in displacement of people and families from their ancestral homes, animals, farmlands as well as destroyed essential infrastructure for their economic prosperity.
While raising concern that the people of Laya town were less privileged persons who had now been displaced by the windstorm and were now living in destitution, suffering and fear of future disasters, the Senate also expressed worry that government agencies had continuously failed to give disaster warnings and preparedness technics to local communities to prevent and control disasters, thereby causing constant fear and lack of preparedness by communities across the country.
The senior federal lawmakers therefore urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development as well as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to send relief materials, especially building materials, to enable the people of Laya town to rebuild their homes and alleviate their pains in view of the impending raining season.
The Senate also mandated the committees on Environment and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks.
