The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, has ordered the immediate dismissal and criminal prosecution of ASP Nuhu Usman and other police officers implicated in the extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
The decision, announced on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, follows a rapid investigation into the brutal incident that sparked widespread outrage after a video of the shooting went viral on social media.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when Effurun Area Command operatives responded to a report involving illegal ammunition, leading to the apprehension of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi.
Video footage showed that ASP Nuhu Usman shot the handcuffed, restrained suspect at close range, a clear violation of force regulations.
The Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) swiftly found the action to be unlawful and unprofessional, leading to the prompt approval of the dismissal of Usman and his team by the IGP.

The brutal, close-range shooting was caught on video, causing widespread outrage on social media and triggering an urgent response from the Delta State Police Command.
The Commissioner of Police in Delta immediately ordered the arrest of ASP Usman and his team, transferring them from Asaba to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for specialized disciplinary proceedings.
The police leadership clarified that “no uniform confers the right to take life outside the provisions of the law”. The dismissal has been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final ratification, assuring that the officers will not return to the service.
In an effort to ensure transparency and accountability, the IGP ordered that the dismissed officers be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for criminal prosecution on charges of homicide.
“The era of impunity is over,” IGP Disu stated, reiterating the Nigeria Police Force’s zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions, abuse of power, and unlawful killings.
The Force extended condolences to the family of the late Mene Ogidi, promising that justice would be served and that the case would not be treated with levity.
