WorldStage— Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) has doubled the international spending limit on its Naira debit cards to $40,000 per quarter, up from the previous limit of $20,000.
The policy update, communicated directly to customers via notice, makes GTBank the first among Nigeria’s newly recapitalised commercial banks to hit this new transaction ceiling.
The expanded threshold provides critical cross-border relief, allowing retail and corporate clients to settle foreign expenses like school tuition, airline bookings, hotel accommodations, and international e-commerce platforms directly from their Naira-funded accounts.
The aggressive limit liberalization signals that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) wider foreign exchange overhauls are successfully restoring deep dollar liquidity and stabilising autonomous FX reserves.
As the premier tier-1 lender to open the floodgates to $40,000, peer institutions like United Bank for Africa (UBA), Access Bank, and Wema Bank are highly likely to track and adjust their cross-border caps to remain competitive.
Because GTBank successfully scaled its capital base to ₦504.037 billion, the bank possesses the structural balance sheet resilience necessary to clear large-volume retail dollar settlements without choking its domestic funding metrics.
