The Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) is currently in the grip of leadership confusion following allegations of misconduct and calls for investigation regarding the contentious, long-term removal of the previous chairman, Danladi Umar.
The crisis, according to insider sources, stemmed from the tribunal’s leadership, specifically bothering on recent developments of appointment of Dr. Mainasara Umar Kogo by President Tinubu in late 2024 to lead and declaration by multiple individuals as chairman of the Tribunal.
Reports from late 2024 and early 2025 indicated a scenario where multiple individuals potentially presented themselves as chairmen, with concerns about whether Dr. Kogo’s appointment followed strict constitutional procedure.
The previous CCT chairman, Danladi Yakubu Umar, had faced numerous allegations of misconduct, including corruption and a physical altercation, leading to Senate probes and calls for his removal.
Staff reports and petitions have historically highlighted concerns regarding the management of the CCT, which are often tied to the ongoing, highly publicized legal and political battles surrounding the CCT chairmanship.
The staff accused the Chairman of attempting to misrepresent facts in his reaction to the report published the following day.
They slso claimed that his denial has raised additional concerns, alleging it has exposed new issues, including claims of forgery and document alteration allegedly carried out hours after the publication, which they say further implicate him in the controversy.
The workers further rejected his defence regarding the alleged employment of his wife at the tribunal, describing his claim that she was erroneously employed by others and that he promptly disowned the appointment as untrue.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has been involved in overseeing the affairs of the tribunal to ensure compliance with the law, as highlighted in reports of disciplinary reviews.
